The delta smelt heads for extinction

Since the Endangered Species Act was signed into law in 1973, no fish has gone extinct. The Delta smelt, which is considered the bellwether of the health of the California Delta estuary, may become the first.

While the fate of the smelt hangs in the balance; the real issue is the fate of the delta. And the decline of the smelt tells us it’s in trouble.
