Miramichi salmon pools close as temperature soars

A fisherman releases wild Atlantic silver salmon into the cold water

The federal government has closed 30 salmon pools along the Miramichi River because they’re too warm.

The heat lately has driven water temperatures higher than 20 C for more than two consecutive nights, forcing a temporary ban on fishing in the pools.

And the situation with the salmon pools is getting worse, says Mark Hambrook, the Miramichi Watershed Management Committee vice-president.
