The Biden administration on Wednesday announced that it would complete a major environmental analysis of mining near Minnesota’s Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, reversing a 2018 Trump administration review in favor of a less-stringent environmental assessment.
The Department of Agriculture and the Department of the Interior filed an application for a “mineral withdrawal” in the area. The application will initiate a 2-year environmental review by the BLM and the U.S. Forest Service. The directive will prohibit new mining permits or leases in the area for 2 years and the results of the BLM’s review could result in a 20-year ban on mining ban mining in the region.
