Pebble Mine fight aired at US House hearing

Let me state, right from the start, that the Pebble Mine proposal is a bad idea made even worse by the sham review process currently underway. – Peter DeFazio (D-OR)

For Alaskans opposed to the Pebble Mine, a hearing in the U.S. House Wednesday was an opportunity to raise the issue on a national stage, and to ask Congress to stop the proposed gold and copper mine upstream from Bristol Bay.

Don Young did his usual Don Young thing and kvetched about the science and was promptly schooled by Richard Borden, a geologist and environmental scientist with over 30 years of experience in the mining and consulting industries.

Pebble CEO Tom Collier was the only witness for the mine and Transportation Committee Chairman Peter DeFazio challenged him on the financial viability of the whole project.

Chairman Defazio’s opening statement can be seen in the video above, it’s a must-watch.
