Orri’s Story

Orri Vigfússon is an Icelandic entrepreneur and environmentalist. As a life-long outdoorsman, Vigfússon first became aware of declining salmon stocks in the 1970s while fishing along the rivers of his native northern Iceland. Speaking with others who lived or fished along local rivers, he learned the extent of Iceland’s shrinking river salmon populations. In response, Vigfússon founded the Iceland-based North Atlantic Salmon Fund (NASF).

In 2004 Time Magazine named him a “European Hero.”

In 2007 he was awarded the Goldman Environmental Prize for his efforts on saving endangered species. His acceptance speech is as relevant today as it was a decade ago.

In 2008, he was elected as a Senior Global Fellow to the Ashoka Fellowship.

Orri Vigfússon is a hero.
