Translate Chum

A mash-up of Recycled Fish and Moldy Chum, the Schtick is produced weekly by Mauro Media, covers the top stories here on Moldy Chum and what’s new at Recycled Fish. It’s some of the best guests the world of fishing has to offer: People off the beaten path with great stories to tell, men and women bringing innovation and discovery, some quirky personalities, and some of the biggest names and events.

Each week we also cover what’s hot in conservation and stewardship news too, so you’ll not only be a better informed angler, you’ll be a better informed steward.

The Fish Schtick is now available on iTunes, RSS, or listen online through the Mauro Media website. Links to the first nine episodes are below.

Episode 30 - Bill Farnum has been an avid fly fisherman as long as he can remember. He picked up his first fly rod on a trip to the Upper Sacramento River while attending college at UC Davis. Today he lives in Sherwood, Oregon with his wife Beth and their two kids, Ella and Alex.

Episode 29 - Thad Robison with Mayfly Media is responsible for putting on the Fly Fishing Film Tour – a national tour of amazing cinematography centered around the sport of fly fishing. He’s been a Fish Schtick guest before, but with the Fly Fishing Film tour about to re-launch, we had to have him back for a rundown on the tour, and what life is like out on the road.

Episode 28 - For today’s show, we’ve got something special – our Ice Fishing Spectacular. We’ll be talking to some of our favorite personalities from across the world of ice fishing, from some of the biggest names to some of the rising stars. You’re gonna love today’s show, whether you’re in to ice fishing or not.

Episode 27 - April Vokey has become a sensation in the world of fly fishing due in no small part to her FlyGal Blog. Part of the younger generation of fly anglers who are changing the face of the sport, April makes her living as a fly fishing instructor and guide. We know none like her in the world of fly fishing, for that matter, in the world. You’ll find out why on today’s Fish Schtick.

Episode 26 - Zeno Hromin is an author and a guide specializing on catching stripers in the surf. Putting on countless hours fishing the South Shore and Montauk, he’s become an expert in the art of surf casting.

Episode 25 - For today’s show, we thought we’d cover some of the stuff we want for Christmas, if you’d like to send anything our way. If not, maybe this will inspire your Christmas list, or give you some ideas for someone on your list. It’s the first ever Fish Schtick Holiday Gift Guide!

Episode 24 - Today’s guest is Fran Mariani, host of Fly Cast America – the only fly fishing offering on ESPN Latin America. He and his partner travel across South America fishing waters familiar to a North American audience like those in Patagonia for giant trout, and some less familiar waters for species exotic and less familiar to us. They also introduce North American destinations to their audience – last season they fished U.S. waters like Miami’s Biscayne Bay for bonefish, and Utah’s Green River.

Episode 23 - John Crews joins us on today’s Fish Schtick. One of the younger generation of stars in the world of professional bass fishing, John is more than a BASS Elite Angler. He is also currently the president of the PAA - the Professional Angler’s Association. To be elected president means that you have gained a position of respect among your peers, and you’ll have no question as to why after meeting him on today’s show.

Episode 22 - Conventional wisdom says the last thing you would want to do is launch a new print fly fishing publication in this new world of on-line media. Well our guest on this week's episode of The Schtick does not subscribe to conventional wisdom. Jeff Galbraith and his team have recently launched The Flyfish Journal, fly fishing's coffee-table bible that covers fly fishing's icons, environment, and global culture.

Episode 21 - Mike Savlen joins us from New Hampshire today. Mike is an artist whose past professions have run from ditch digger to art director, victorian restoration painter to nightclub owner, sign carver to commercial fisherman and many more in between. Today he splits time between Costa Rica and Cape Cod. We’ll talk about Mike’s gamefish illustrations, marine paintings, his new bragging rights portraits, and lots of other stuff on today’s Fish Schtick.

Episode 20 - Shane Davies has been guiding on the Brazos River in Texas since 1994. Today, he guides exclusively from kayaks, with a strong emphasis on catch and release fishing for trophy fish. He’s an innovative angler, and he is exactly the kind of personality we seek out for The Fish Schtick

Episode 19 - Carrol Henderson joins us on today’s Fish Schtick. He’s an Iowa Boy like me – he grew up on a farm in central Iowa where his dad took him fishing at farm ponds for sunfish and bullheads. Today he lives in St. Paul, Minnesota where he works for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.
