How Marine Protected Areas Help Fisheries and Ocean Ecosystems

One of the most powerful and effective methods for protecting fisheries resources and ocean life is the marine protected area (MPA)—a clearly defined geographic space managed for long-term conservation.

The recently released MPA Guide—a collaboration between the U.N. Environment World Conservation Monitoring Centre and other organizations—outlines the stages of MPA establishment, the varying levels of MPA protection, and the expected conservation outcomes based on an MPA’s level of protection.

The brief also presents a new analysis of U.S. MPAs—which examines their geographic distribution, size, and level of protection—to make the case for an expansion of the MPA system in the United States.
