Fish Schtick Episodes 56 and 57

We closed out the 2010 Fish Schtick campaign with two new episodes.

    Episode 56 - Amanda Switzer

Though she originally went to school to become a landscape architect, Amanda Switzer became a fishing guide after working for one year too long in an office. Unhappy with the ho-hum buzz of everyday work, she thanked her boss for not firing her, politely quit, bought a flats boat and started a flyfishing-guide business in her home waters of eastern Long Island. She’s 25 years into it and now she’s building a new rod company – think she’s got a few stories to tell?

    Episode 57 - Best of 2010

It’s that year-end time when everybody looks back at the peaks and valleys of the year, the hits and misses, the highs and the lows. This show is dedicated to that – some of our favorite Fish Schtick guests and moments from the year gone by.

Pike have been described as jet-propelled mouths

A BBC Living World broadcast on the most fearsome of freshwater predators.

The pike has a fearsome reputation as Britain's most successful freshwater river predator. Keen fisherman and retired freshwater biologist Mike Ladle will never forget the first time he landed a pike. He was trying to catch eels, and hauled up a pike instead. When he tried to release the hook from inside its mouth, he soon found out why fishermen treat pike with such respect: their mouths are lined with rows of backwardly pointing teeth. They even have teeth on their tongue, a tongue which is green in colour! So once a pike has trapped its prey in its mouth there is no escape from those rows of thorn-like teeth.

    Episode 30  - Bill Farnum - Casting 4 A Cure

Bill Farnum has been an avid fly fisherman as long as he can remember. He picked up his first fly rod on a trip to the Upper Sacramento River while attending college at UC Davis. Today he lives in Sherwood, Oregon with his wife Beth and their two kids, Ella and Alex. Their first daughter, Ella, has Rett syndrome, which led Bill to create Casting 4 A Cure – an organization dedicated to helping researchers find a cure for Rett Syndrome in the next 10 years, while helping support Rett families in the here and now. While addressing a serious, and deeply personal issue for Bill, their events manage to be a lot of fun, and raise some serious cash for the cause.

    The Fish Schtick

A few months back Michael Mauro approached me about doing a podcast in conjunction with Teeg Stouffer at Recycled Fish. Having absolutely no experience with the genre, or comfort level behind the mic, I said, "Why not" .... and the Fish Schtick was spawned. A mash-up of Recycled Fish and Moldy Chum, the Schtick is produced weekly by Mauro Media, covers the top stories here on Moldy Chum and what’s new at Recycled Fish. It’s some of the best guests the world of fishing has to offer: People off the beaten path with great stories to tell, men and women bringing innovation and discovery, some quirky personalities, and some of the biggest names and events.

Each week we also cover what’s hot in conservation and stewardship news too, so you’ll not only be a better informed angler, you’ll be a better informed steward.

The Fish Schtick is now available on iTunes, RSS, or listen online through the Mauro Media website. Links to the first nine episodes are below.

Episode 9: Dylan Tomine / freelance steelhead bum, writer, sink-tip addict, Patagonia fly fishing ambassador and "reluctant’ conservationist.”
