Rogue River carves its way around Gold Ray Dam ahead of schedule

Some great news from Oregon.

The Rogue River has started flowing free at the former site of Gold Ray dam for the first time in 106 years. The removal of Gold Ray opens up 157 miles of free flowing river on the Rogue between Lost Creek Dam and the Pacific.

Very good news!
I was in Grants Pass a few weeks ago, fished around the old Savage Rapids dam site. Got a chance to talk to some of the older locals, still a hot topic this dam removal stuff, but there coming around. Glad to see the injunction went no where.
As of a report done in '05 (a bit dated) there are still 80 non-hydro dams (most for irrigation) in the Rouge basin, but that beats the hundreds that used to be there.

Woke up at first light, rowed out into the lower Rogue, which had been a beautiful green the prior two days, and it was soupy. I figured it was just a nasty algea bloom from the hot weather inland, but I guess not!

Very exciting to see the Rogue making such incredible progress!! What a river!!!
