Passage would allow unlimited, indiscriminate harvest of striped bass

California Assemblywoman Jean Fuller (R-Bakersfield) has introduced legislation, AB 1253, to remove gamefish status for striped bass. The bill will be heard in the Water, Parks & Recreation Committee of the California State Assembly in Meeting Room 437, on Tuesday, April 28, at 9 a.m.

The bill is opposed by an unprecedented coalition of recreational fishing, commercial fishing and environmental restoration groups and businesses.

Dan Bacher reports that massive opposition to AB 1253, a bill attacking Bay-Delta fish populations, resulted in the gutting of the bill in the State Assembly yesterday. LINK

I am going along with this because it's one of those tip-of-the-iceberg things IMHO. Stripers, LMBs, salmonids and delta smelt have co-habitated for a long time now despite not all being native. No one will evenr know how native salmonids would be faring sans the presence of stripers or LMBs etc. That said, it remains ironic that a fight like this pivots off of an introduced species. Sigh ...

You guys are idiots. Striper, Salmon, and steelhead have coexisted here for nearly a century. Within that century, we have had record Salmon runs on the Sacramento River. Blame fisheries management for the decline in the salmonid population, not the Striper. In fact, how about you go try Striper fishing once...... then give me your opinion. Save the Striper! By the Way,.... the bill was quashed before it even made it to the floor......
