Nov Slab of the Month Entry: Largemouth Yellowfish

Here's a unique pic sent to us by South African Chummist - Ricko Cronje.  T - Bone Potgieter plucked this this Largemouth Yellowfish from the Vaal river in South Africa.  We'll admit it - never seen, smelt or heard of this fish.  But it clearly looks like a species that commands a bit of respect.

Thanks guys , jip Tyrone landed this Largie on a 6 wt Sage TCX , the reel is a Ross Evolution 3 . We mainly use intermediate line to fish for these guys.

This is an endangered species in Southern Africa , we have a tag and trace program running currently to try and find out a bit more on their whereabouts and habits.

Once again , thanks for posting this to your well respected wall .

Looks like its a cross between a carp, with a carpish squafish like head. Very interesting catch. Great fish!!! Very Cooll!!

This is one of the premier , indigenous fish in Southern Africa! As South Africa does not have any indigenous salmonoid species , this is the holy grail for us.
The Large Mouth Yellow fish fish lives in our river systems , in the Northern parts of the country , and is a predator of note!
They like clean water , and mainly hunt at night..especially the big fish.
To catch these guys , especially in the size that T-Bone Tye is holding , is a feat , as this is one very wary fish...
    That is a great catch!

I love the way this fish looks. It reminds me of the white fish we get into here in the Rockies.

This is a fish that i have not caught before. they are extremely rare and tough to catch here in south africa and that is a beautifull specimen (although they are know to get much bigger, even in the range of 20 kg's plus. they do look a little like carp but much stronger. think carp with the agression of Bass. they are mean predators often target on fly, but also taken on certain rapalas and even soft plastics such as the zoom super fluke. ofcourse i am not talking from experience sadly. :( would kill to take one of these, well done man.
