Nov Slab of the Month Entry: Aligator Gar

    Angler:  Joel Stewart
    Location: Pascagoula Mississippi
Delio: 100+lb alligator gar on a 8wt TFO rod, using a white streamer.

Biggest gar ever caught on a fly?  Until proven otherwise, we're gonna give it a nod.  In the meantime, we're gonna suggest Joel sticks up a weight or two if he's gonna make this a habit.

You've had some impressive Slabs over the last month or two but that tops them all.......by a long haul.Gets my vote.

was this caught with a white nylon rope fly with no hook, or an actual fly with a hook?

    Good haul regardless....

That's bad ass! Considering it is a gator gar I'm gonna assume a hooked fly as I don't believe ropes work on gators like they do on Longnosers

To answer the question - it was a nylon streamer - with hook. I found them impossible to land without the hook. The nylon holds the fly in the maw long enough for the hook to find purchase.

Yeah, the people I know who gar fish a lot only use ropes on Longnose Gar - they had even more tightly packed teeth than other gars making the ropes grab more effectvely

thanks for the answer, never fished for alligator gar, if I do will add a hook...always went hookless for longnose as mentioned.

I have never had the urge to vote for Slab of the Month until now. That's one beautiful slab.

So, is posting here how you vote? I can't seem to find the ballot box....
